I live in Maryland USA and Maggie has dibieties and cushings......lately she started biting on the covers of the bed in the morning, just in the morning....she also seems to be panting a bit more on the vetoryl......when I gave her Modrenal she seemed to get sleepier... she is on 14 units of insulen twice a day and 30 mg of modrenal/vetroyl a day......I do feel the human version of the drug is still somehow a bit different.....Maggie is 10 year old bicheon...she was my mom's dog....I gave her to her after my dad passed away and I got her back....I have 2 other dogs and 2 cats...I love animals....I think she has had cushings/dibeties for a few years because my mom used to tell me she would wake her up with her panting....and she had always had a ravinous appetitie..........

It seems to me that you both have elderly dogs, both of which have a combination of potentially serious illnesses!
It may well be that the best treatment will do no more than slow down the deterioration of their condition. Regular monitoring visits to your veterinarian are essential.
The only people who can tell you if there are pharmacological differences between Modrenal and Vetoryl are the manufacturers. I think it is unlikely, since the cost of maintaining two production lines instead of one would be considerable.
Only a few years ago treatment of your dogs would have been impossible. let us be thankful that they can now be helped.
You must also bear in mind, as your dogs get older and respond less well to their treatment, that their life span is very much shorter than ours, and one of the privileges of pet ownership, as well as one of the responsibilities, is to be able to decide when it is no longer in the interests of a much loved pet to continue treatment when it is clear that your pet has a very poor quality of life.

Thank you Walter, what type of monitering can the vet do. Bloodwork? I get her sugar tested every so often, but not sure what to have checked for the cushings.

I have 2 horses with cushinsgs disease, they both are on permax and has been for years I read about trilostane being used in UK, I live in USA. Both horses have recenly refoundered one has never responded to the permax and I would like to try this on her. What would the dose be for a 1200 lb. horse and how would I get it over here? Hi, Cary, This a matter for you to discuss with your veterinarian, or , if he is not an equine specialist, ask for a referral to your nearest University with a veterinary school.

i am a vet in se london. there are strange laws in this country. where i come from we often would use human generics for tretmant on animals dt lower costs. in this country we are not allowed to use any OFF LABLE (ie a drug not registered for that breed) if there is a veterianary related drug. this isa law in the uk. in cases where we have no choise to use off lable drugs for example valium (human drug) used for seizuires in all animals, we must inform the owner we are using an off lable drug. if we do not and something happens, you as an owner can take further action against us, even if it is the only recommended drug of choice. rediculous i know!
we can be suspended if we break this law. there are so many examples where the human drug is cheaper, but your vet has no choice but to prescribe the veterinary drug. we are not ever allowed to advise you to use the alternative and can not give you a prescription to aquire the drug at your own choice say from boots etc.
i am afraid you must use the drug of choice.....and as you know that is rather pricy! thankfully though it is safer and better than the drug we used to use!

I live in Spain and one of our Staffordshire Bull Terrier bitches has cushings .. she has been on trilostane for 6 mths. now and has grown all her fur back ... we got the capsules from our vet here in Spain, but they had to be imported through Andorra. I would like to locate a UK supplier as they were very expensive to buy here.

We live in Spain and our Whippet, Schweppes, was diagnosed with Cushings nearly two years ago and was put onto 60mg of Vetoryl daily. The cost was 275 euros a bottle of 100 capsules!
We discovered that it was even more expensive if purchased in England.
We have now found a local pharmacy/analysis laboratory where they make up 100 caps of 60mg of Trilostane for 55 euros. They assure us this is identical to Vetoryl.
Schweppes has been on these new caps for nearly two months now without any apparent adverse effects.
So much for EU harmonisation!
We would be happy to pass on the details of the pharmacy to anyone who wishes to contact us.

Thank you for that.

There is NO EU harmonisation on the prescribing and sale of medicines - each member state has it won rules.

In the UK is is illegal to buy 'prescription only' medicines without a prescription, and it is illegal for a veterinary surgeon to prescribe a preparation licensed fo use in humans, even if it is cheaper, when a similar product licensed fo use in the particular species of animal that he is treating exists.

That is the law contained in the Medicines Act, and not the whim of the individual vet.

My dog has cushing's disease. My vet prescribed lysodren. My pet "pants" in the evening when laying in the bed to go to sleep. Is the trilostane a better medication to give? I'm from Florida and would like to know where I can get trilostane.

Hi, Griff,

Modrenal and Trilostan are identical products, as far as I am aware.

Your vet may only LEGALLY prescribe or dispense Vetoryl - that is not his fault, it is the law.

You can always ask him for a prescription, and see if a pharmacist is prepared to dispense Modrenyl at the lower price, but he does not have to, and, strictly speaking, should not do so.

The manufactures sell the product under two different names, with the veterinary product being so much dearer because it has to be licensed for use in dogs, at very considerable expense,(100s of thousands of £s) and because the uptake for veterinary use is so very much lower than it is for human use, the cost is increased accordingly.

MY 7 yr old boxer just been diagnosed with cushings,my reason for taking him to the vets was excessive drinking and extreme urination, he has been prescribed vetoryl, very expensive but if i can have night sleep and dry house wasnt too bothered but vet has told me side effect is being thirsty!!! Would like to know if this has been experienced as if my dog drinks anymore he will spend 24/7 drinking and urinating so what are the expensive tabs for? And does surgery work as it may be an option?

Do you have the experience of purchasing this medicine through the web site 'mastersmarketing.com'. Besides, does anyone have any ideas of getting this medcine directly in Hong Kong? Or getting Modrenal in Hong Kong?

I was devastated when the vet told me this, then he gave me the cost of the medication (Vetoryl) that she will have to be on for the rest of her life and that absolutely floored me. I have had a surprising (even surprising to me) rate of success with the use of homoeopathic remedies for Cushing's disease. A number of patients seem stable either without Vetoryl etc., or with much lower doses of drugs than would be expected. Other homoeopathic vets report high success rates too.

There is no single group of remedies that works for every dog, but I do prescribe some remedies (such as Quercus robor) for most patients.
