Hi,

You say it is ione year since you got your hamster, but how old was she then. Was she full grown or just a baby, because hamsters rarely live much beyond two.
However old, she is, you have a very sick little animal with a severe bleeding problem which I suspect will prove impossible to treat. Keep her warm and comfortable, but I am sorry to say that you must be prepared for the worst outcome.

You need to take your Hamster to the vet straight away so they can help her, you dont want to leave her suffering like this and they may be able to treat her.

Hi,
Whatever the pet shop said, they should have been kept separate from the beginning. Not only have they been aggressive with each other it has clearly spilled over into being a ggressive with you, and this is not now likely to improve to the extent of either of them becoming a cuddly pet.
Youn must separate them inmmediately. The wounds will stop bleeding without treatment.

Hi,

If you cannot see where the blood is comming from, I am afraid that I cannot from here!
You provide very little infoemation - her age, for example - few hamsters live to be 2 years old.

If you are concerned about it and she is still young, it might be a good idea to get her to your vet.

Hi, please help me.

I got my hamster 4 months ago and he was very little, i believe he was only 2 weeks old.
2 weeks ago, i noticed his nose had dry blood on it, then it went away, now its back, and i think his whole nose is like that.
he has been acting weird for the past 4 days, he doesnt move around as much as he used to do, hes always nesting ! i try to take him out and let him play outside, but hes starting to get scared of that.
i think also hes itching himself more now, and sometimes he shakes his whole body very fast (its hard to explain)
and just a minute ago, i noticed hes been openning his mouth widly and sticking his tongue (is there something in his mouth !!)

please help me, this is the first time i have a hamster!

Hi,

I suspect that your hamster may have a skin infection which he may have had since you got him, or an irritation from his bedding. Either could produce a constant irritation which is preventing him from resting.
If you got him from a good pet shop you could take him back and ask their advice, or, if you are prepared to pay for a consultation, to a vet who knows about small furry animals for their advice.

Had you thought of taking the hamster to the vet? If your eye was bleeding perhaps you might see a doctor? I am tempted to say more but I won't.

I'm worried about my hamster.
May 18, 2011 09:07PM
Lately, my hamster has not been herself. She hasn't been very active. I thought it might have been because she was tired but she has gotten worse. She also has a few other symptoms. Today, when I came home from school, I went to go play with her like I usually do, I saw that she had been bleeding. I think the source of the blood may be her vagina or her anus. She has gotten blood all over her nose, mouth, a little on her stomach, and she has a big, dry blood spot near her anus. I do not know what's wrong. I tried researching it, that's how I found this site. I want to take her to the vet, but I don't think my dad will say yes because she is only a hamster. She Isn't very old. I have only had her for maybe a month or two now. She wasn't very old when I got her(I don't know the exact age). Please help me. I am very concerned.

I suppose the question is whether this is blood from an injury that has stopped bleeding now - she may have hurt herself in her cage for instance - or is she still bleeding? Gently clean off the blood with some damp cotton wool so you can check whether there are any wounds and also see whether after you have cleared up the blood more appears telling you she is still bleeding. If you find a wound keep it clean with salty water until it heals. If the blood is coming from her vagina then she has an infection in her womb and needs to see a vet. As far as you dad goes speak to him because he may say 'better take it to the vet' or if he says no try to explain to him that 'its only a hamster' is not a very good attitude - it is a living creature which can feel pain. Actually not to take a sick animal to a vet is illegal (Animal Welfare ACT 2006)

Hello,

I am really worried that my hamster has injured her nose somehow. Last night I put her in her ball to get some exercise around the house. She was running around like normal and then just stopped. I went to take her out of her ball and she was screaming (well, what I call her scream. the little chirping sound) I picked her up and held her and all she did was rub at her nose. I looked at her nose and it was bleeding. Not gushing blood or anything just looked like she may have injured her nose. I tried to calm her down but all she wants to do is rub her nose. I kept a close eye on her last night and she didn't want to run on her wheel or anything just wanted to hide in one of her tubes. The problem is I cannot seem to find a vet that specializes in small animals. Please help. She is now sleeping in her house and either lays perfectly still or is rubbing her nose.
What can I do. I am still trying to find a vet but for the time being I need to know what I can do for her.

Thanks,

Firstly I think if your hamster just cut its nose in the ball that, she should not be overly bothered after an hour or so especially since you say it seems such a small amount of blood. I am more inclined to wonder whether the blood may have come from her mouth such as having bitten herself or even broken one of her front teeth. Small furries are very particular about dental/oral pain and they become miserable and dont eat, which seems to fit more with what you are describing. It may be that if the tooth is broken and sharp it is injuring the mouth. Try and have a look at her front teeth and see if there is any evidence for this - you can slide the blunt end of a pencil gently into her mouth just enough to open it so you can see properly. If the teeth are broken the vet can cut them above the break which should help; she may need antibiotics if infection has set in. Remember a hamster that hasn't eaten for a few days may die if it is not attended to - I dont say this to frighten you but it is very important that they keep eating or they do not have enough energy to keep warm and do not have much reserves of fat to use. You should not need a specialist - most vets should be able to sort this for you.

This sounds like a sudden injury so just keep it clean and hopefully that will be the end of the problem. If your hamster stops eating well then there may be more important damage in which case you should take the hamster to a vet.

I am afraid that like your vet I am not a hamster expert, but this sounds very nasty and I wonder if there is much that can be done. The most important thing is to keep the hamster warm and get him to the vet to see if the problem can be fixed.

About 3 months ago I brought a new hamster from a pet store..its not the first hamster I've had and I currently have one that I've had for nearly 3 yrs so I know pretty much how to care for them well etc.. However 4 days ago I noticed that my new hamster wouldn't open his eyes,he was still running around, eating and drinking etc so I just wiped them with cotton wool and kept an eye on him.he's been fine since and one eye has now opened fully..but I came home tonight to find him crouched in a corner and he seemed very tired and lethargic,I gave him some water and food and made sure he drank etc and then as he turned I noticed some blood on his front paws. As I looked I saw that there is a wet patch of fur on his back (he'd been sitting on this area so I couldn't see) I presume the wet stuff is blood as its on his paws, there is no sign of a cut or injury and no obvious sign of where the blood is coming from. He's still eating and drinking and he's walking around. I've changed his bedding, took out toys etc and gave him extra bedding for warmth. I just don't see how he could have cut himself if that's what he's done as all he had in the cage was a little house, a cardboard tube,a wheel, his food dish and a wooden teeth gnawer...the only thing I can think is he's gnawed the wooden tooth thing and made it sharp?! Its obviously late an the vet is unavailable at this time but does anyone have any idea what this could be or whether he'll be ok?

Hi, My Hamster's 1 years old and she has some red like bleeding spots around her nose.
She's been having this for a while now, and it's really hard to explain.
But whenever she gets it, she doesn't even notice's it, and then it goes a few days or hours later.
My family and I thought it was just her running around her cage and climbing on her bars and she might have just fallen
down on her nose.
But i'm getting really worried now, because she's only one sad smiley

P.s She's a very healthy hamster, eating normally, sleeping normally and drinks fine!!
Please reply back smiling smiley
Thanks

I get a lot (too many) people say that their hamsters are bleeding and I have always taken this at face value as I am not looking at the patients but I am beginning to wonder whether these hamsters, in some cases, are not bleeding. Fresh blood should look red or slightly blue and old blood should look more black and crusty. Brown stains are more likely to be staining from saliva or from wiping mucus off the face. Especially when the eyes are affected I wonder whether your hamster has a respiratory infection which are very common in hamsters. If this is the case then antibiotics are probably needed.

Again I would say about the 'bleeding spots around the nose', are you sure this is blood? Sounds like this may be mucus (is it browny colour?) and normal, especially if your hamster is not unwell.

Hi
My hamster is a boy he is 2 and a bit years old and he has been fine till yesterday evening when I heard him sort of sneezing! So I took him out of his cage and looked at him and he was having a nose bleed and it is now 6:30 AM the following morning and he is restles and is still making sneezing noises but there is only dry blood so what should I do should I try and wash off the dry blood or should I leave it and take him to a vet to get him checked out?!?! We were comforting him all last night ! I am 14 and he is my first ever pet what should I do??? Please help me I don't want him to die this way!?
Re: my hamster is bleeding?!

I would probably clean the blood off gently with some damp cotton wool to stop it attracting infection. It may be however that the cause of the nose bleed in a hamster of this age is due to one of the following: something that has got up the hamster's nose, dental problems, infection or a tumour. Unfortunately hamsters do not live long lives (anything more than 2 is a bonus usually) and they are prone to tumours so it may be that the signs will continue and there may not be much that can be done.

This past Friday my sister and I had gone to Pet Co. While there we bought a Dwarf Hamster. His name is Pikachu, I have been extremly worried for him these past couple of days. Monday before I went to bed I was looking in his cage and watching him roll around in the paper bedding we have for him. He was fine. The next day I wanted to hold him. He was on his wheel. When I went to touch him he didn't react like he normaly would. He was more dull. He moved but he barley moved. I thought well he just woke up so its fine. Then I grabed him and picked him up. I looked at his stomach and down by his "area" there was a lot of blood. I was upset. So, I put him back in and i asked my brother. He had no great ideas. Then I told my dad he just told me that he was going to die. I got even more upset. But recently he has been biting his area. There was also white liquid in his eyes when he opened them. He hasn't opened his eyes since I took him outside to show my dad yesterday. I don't kno what's going on. But I would really like some anwsers. We are also taking him back to Pet Co. So he can get checked out. I'm scared he might die. We have barley had him for a week. But I also have two rats. They are fine and healthy. I have never had a problem with them. But my baby pikachu is sick. I need help. Also, His paws and mouth have blood on them too, from him biting himself.

Any advice?

Unfortunately I do not know why your hamster is bleeding but it may be secondary to the scratching which can be caused by mites or bedding allergies. Make sure you get him looked at by a vet.
